Q: How does ingesting mushrooms improve the skin?

A: When ingested, mushrooms are wonderful sources of antioxidants, B vitamins, selenium and polyphenols. Mushrooms contain their own unique form of antioxidants including ergothioeine which is naturally high in sulphur. These antioxidants are responsible for the anti-aging effects on the skin and an overall de-stressing effect on the face and body.

Q: Are all mushrooms created equal or these properties limited to specific types?

A: Mushrooms are certainly not all created equal with the medicinal mushrooms with the shitake & maitake families being superior to the standard white button mushrooms found at most supermarkets. Mushrooms are also very sensitive to chemicals and heavy metals so always make sure you buy organic if you choose to add them to your diet. To benefit from the powerful antioxidants (and therefore anti-aging effects) you would need to ingest organic medicinal mushrooms. I therefore recommend to my patients to take THE SUPER ELIXIR that includes my balanced blend of these each day to fast track their daily requirements.

Q: Why do you think certain types of mushrooms and their extracts have become popular in beauty formulas and skincare products? 

A: The more organic, whole food and clinically proven ingredients the better. Medicinal mushrooms have stood the test of time since the Ming Dynasty so they are a wonderful ingredient to add to your overall health and beauty routine. In my opinion, all skin types benefit from less oxidation due to anti-oxidant ingredients acting as free radical scavengers.
